I went hiking recently. I haven’t explored many trails, and since I’ve never been particularly fond of sports or exercise, I used to hike purely for health reasons. Because of that, it usually ended after just once or twice rather than becoming a habit. It would have been nicer if I had found some real meaning or purpose in it; simply walking through forest paths, climbing high slopes, or covering long distances just for the sake of health never quite captivated me. There was rarely that sense of fulfillment or the irresistible pull that makes you want to return—until I hiked the Apex and Paul’s Tomb trails on Knox Mountain.

That was when I realized it. Whether we exercise for our health or go hiking, walking, or trekking, it takes genuine interest, attraction, and personal enjoyment to truly feel the joy and the thrilling satisfaction that follows. Hiking the Apex and Paul’s Tomb trails on Knox Mountain made me realize this. I was simply filled with awe—wondering how such incredible trails could exist so close to the city, and how a place like this ever came to be. This feeling is surely shared by everyone who lives here and anyone who has visited even once. I just want to share that this is a truly next-level hiking experience—one that no photograph, no matter how many you take, can ever fully capture.

The Apex and Paul’s Tomb trails, which I visit frequently, are the most iconic routes in Knox Mountain Park. To get here, simply set your GPS navigation to ‘Knox Mountain Tennis Courts’ and park in the surrounding designated area upon arrival.

Both trails share the same starting point. After about a 15-minute hike toward Apex, you’ll reach the Lower Crown Lookout. From here, you can take in the panoramic view of downtown Kelowna and the Okanagan Lake Bridge, officially named the William R. Bennett Bridge. The view of the lake is nothing short of breathtaking. You can also drive up to this lookout point, though vehicle access hours are limited. Once you’ve caught your breath and taken a few photos, the trail truly splits into two distinct paths.

The Apex Trail continues upward toward the summit of Knox Mountain for another 20 to 25 minutes. Pushing through a rewarding sweat while taking in wide-open views, it’s a favorite cardiovascular workout spot among locals. As you tackle the steep stairs and gravel paths, breathing heavy and feeling the burn in your legs, you finally reach the Upper Crown Lookout at the top. The effort is immediately rewarded by a refreshing breeze and a breathtaking, 360-degree panoramic view of downtown Kelowna and the lake.

Next is the Paul’s Tomb Trail. Taking about an hour to an hour and a half round trip, it is an easy hike, yet so breathtakingly beautiful that I completely fell in love with it. Made up of smooth, well-maintained dirt and gravel paths with almost no incline, it is comfortably accessible for all ages, dogs, and strollers alike. Walking with a lush pine forest on your right and the sparkling blue Okanagan Lake on your left, listening to the gentle breeze and soothing sound of the water, it feels like pure therapy.

Far from monotonous, the trail offers captivating and ever-changing views from start to finish, culminating in a hidden gem—the pebble beach of Paul’s Tomb Cove. In the summer, it becomes a lively yet relaxing spot where people enjoy swimming, paddleboarding, and snorkeling, while local youth leap from the adjacent rock cliffs for some cliff jumping. It is also a dog-friendly haven, making it the perfect place to unwind.

They say it is the most gorgeous trail to walk while watching the sunset paint the sky over the lake, though I haven’t had the chance to witness it yet. If a single trail feels a bit short for a full workout, I highly recommend combining the two. Covering roughly 5.8 to 6.2 km and taking about 1.5 to 2 hours, this route takes you up to the summit (Upper Crown Lookout) via the Apex Trail first, before tracing your steps back down to the Lower Crown Lookout to seamlessly transition onto the Paul’s Tomb Trail.

Apex Trail

Paul’s Tomb Cove

It is the ultimate, well-rounded route—pushing through a rewarding sweat on the Apex uphill for the first 30 to 40 minutes, then cooling down along the refreshing lakeside path of Paul’s Tomb while enjoying a light snack at Paul’s Tomb Cove beach. Lately, this has become the exact routine my husband and I love to do.

Here is the custom loop route we put together:

Start at Main Gate → Uphill via Apex Trail

Pass Lower Crown Lookout (Midway Viewpoint)

Arrive at Upper Crown Lookout (Summit) & cool off

Head back down via Apex Trail (towards starting direction)

Descend to Lower Crown Lookout

Transition towards Paul’s Tomb Trail (Lochview/Paul’s Tomb Link)

Rest & snack time at Paul’s Tomb Cove beach

Take the uphill fork towards Crown Lookout on the way back → Return to Main Gate (Paul’s Tomb Trailhead)”

As we walked along these paths, we listened to many fascinating stories and learned so much—so I’ve gathered these insights and historical background about Knox Mountain Park to share here.

The name Knox Mountain originates from Arthur Knox, an early apple orchardist. In the late 19th century, he owned vast tracts of land around Knox Mountain and north of downtown, where he operated both livestock ranching and apple orchards.

Born in Scotland in 1848, Arthur Knox was one of the early pioneers who immigrated to Western Canada in his youth and settled in the Okanagan Valley. During the late 1800s (between the 1870s and 1890s), he acquired vast parcels of land spanning the entire northern area of downtown, including what is now Knox Mountain Park.

He initially started his venture as a livestock ranch, taking advantage of Knox Mountain’s dry grasslands and rolling hills. Between the 1890s and early 1900s, as irrigation systems were introduced and optimal fruit-growing conditions took shape across the Okanagan region, he established a large-scale apple orchard on the flat land at the foot of Knox Mountain. Through this, he became one of the key early orchardists who helped Kelowna earn its reputation as the ‘Apple Capital’ today.

In the late 19th century, locals looking at the massive mountain standing like a backdrop just north of downtown Kelowna began referring to it as ‘Knox’s Mountain,’ after Arthur Knox’s farm. Although the land owned by Arthur Knox was later subdivided and sold to the City of Kelowna and other pioneers including Rembler Paul, the well-established name ‘Knox Mountain’ remained as the official name of the mountain.

Following the origin of Knox Mountain’s name, there is also a fascinating story hidden behind the name ‘Paul’s Tomb.

The name ‘Paul’s Tomb’ is not just a casual trail name, but one born from the existence of an actual tomb. Locals and visitors naturally began referring to the spot as the lakeside site where Rembler Paul’s tomb stood. Later, as the City of Kelowna designated the area as a park and established the trails, it was officially adopted as the name of both the landmark and the trail itself: Paul’s Tomb Trail.

In the early 1910s, Rembler Paul constructed a massive, sturdy underground concrete family vault about 30 meters above the lake. Although designed to hold eight coffins, only two were ever placed inside: his wife, Elizabeth Paul, who passed away from cancer in 1914, and Rembler Paul himself, who died during a trip to Edmonton in 1916 and was brought back here. Built to withstand natural disasters and intruders, the tomb featured walls nearly 40 cm (16 inches) thick and was fitted with a heavy iron vault door crafted by Taylor Safe Works, accessible only via a combination dial.

So, who exactly was Rembler Paul? As mentioned earlier, he was one of the prominent pioneers who purchased land from Arthur Knox.

Rembler Paul was an adventurous entrepreneur who, after retiring from a 20-year career as a veterinarian, amassed great wealth through diverse ventures including gold, silver, and coal mining, as well as stocks, real estate, and money lending.

Before moving to Kelowna, he had already operated a massive farm spanning over 3,000 acres near Regina, Saskatchewan. In 1905, he relocated to Kelowna and purchased land near downtown, and in 1912, he built a summer house overlooking the lake at what is now the end of the Paul’s Tomb Trail. While no physical structure of the summer house remains today, the open clearing located near the end of the Paul’s Tomb Trail—just before descending to Paul’s Tomb Cove beach—marks the exact site where it once stood. Today, it has been transformed into a picnic area, leaving no visible trace of the original home.

Though I visit this place so often, I had no idea it held such rich history. Back then, the area around Knox Mountain was undeveloped wilderness, so he carved out the land along the lake almost like a true pioneer. Rembler Paul was also a forward-thinking enthusiast of new technology, becoming one of the very first people to bring a steam-powered car—a Stanley Steamer—to Kelowna in the early 1900s. Since proper roads didn’t exist at the time, records show he personally cleared and smoothed the hilly path up Knox Mountain to drive up to his summer home. In essence, part of the Paul’s Tomb Trail we walk today was originally paved by him for his cottage and automobile.

With such a grand history, why is the tomb no longer visible and buried underground today?

Local legends spread that immense treasure was hidden behind the vault door built by the billionaire pioneer, leading to relentless attempts to vandalize the site during the 1960s and 1970s.

In 1971, to prevent further risk of desecration and public safety hazards, the City of Kelowna completely buried the tomb entrance under nearly 3 meters (10 feet) of soil and gravel.

According to local historical records, accounts coexist between whether the remains of the couple were safely relocated to the Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery prior to the burial, or if they still rest beneath the earth.

The site is located on the flat ridge just above the small pebble beach of Paul’s Tomb Cove at the end of the trail.

Although the entrance is entirely submerged in dirt leaving almost no visible structure except for the ‘AD 1910’ inscription carved onto the upper concrete arch, it has remained elusive every time I’ve tried to spot it.

Yet, the lilac and iris flowers that Rembler Paul planted around his summer home in the early 1900s still bloom like wildflowers every spring.

I will certainly have to visit this coming spring to look for those blossoms.

Learning the stories behind this path makes me reflect—even if I can only guess the exact spot now, I feel deeply grateful for the pioneering spirit that carved out this route a century ago, gifting us with such breathtaking views and serenity today.
