As I created and launched this blog, I felt a deep need to write down the reasons behind it at least once. Starting something this unfamiliar at my age seemed less like an exciting challenge and more like a reckless ambition to those around me—their words filled mostly with worry that I would soon give up.
Taking the first step was hard. It is still hard now, and I know it won’t get any easier.
Taking the first step was hard. It is still hard now, and I know it won’t get any easier.
Typing out words on a keyboard, organizing photos, and uploading them without any set plan or sequence—just posting whatever meal I made that day along with its preparation—leaves me looking at the final result thinking there is nothing particularly special about it. In fact, when I consider useful information, technical skills, or expertise, I am nothing more than a complete novice.
I have never written essays, I have no professional experience taking photos, nor do I possess expert knowledge in cooking. So why would someone like me, at my age, bother to take on something this difficult……????

One day, someone asked me:
“Do you have any expertise? Is there anything special you offer? Are you good with computers?” Faced with such questions, I found myself giving up, thinking this was not meant for me. Yet on other days, I would search for tutorials on how to make YouTube videos or Shorts, admiring them from afar and wishing I could do the same. So I stopped to reflect once again, asking myself: Why do I want to do this?

I thought of my mother. I couldn’t remember. I couldn’t remember my mother.

I could always look at photos to see her face, but the times I spent with her, her food, and her heart when she was preparing those meals—none of it came back to me. It felt as if a single sheet of paper had been torn cleanly in half. Instead, the hard times I endured, my family’s struggles, the many things I wanted to do but couldn’t, the wounds inflicted by others, and the lingering regrets of “I wish I had done things differently back then”… these felt like the sum total of my memories.

There was a time in my life when I was a mother, but there was also a time when I lived as a daughter—yet it feels as though I have lived solely and earnestly as a mother. Even so, there are moments when I am suddenly reminded that I, too, once lived as someone’s daughter.
When I was sick, no matter how much healthy food my family brought me, nothing tasted good, and I only ate because I had to. Yet there was one dish I always craved and longed for—a simple bowl of sujebi that my mother used to make whenever I fell ill. I know it must have been truly delicious, but now, I can no longer remember what my mother’s sujebi tasted like.

Growing up, my memories of my mother were always of her working hard and in pain, so I can barely recall the moments we shared together. Yet, certain things remain crystal clear: the sujebi she used to make, the rolled omelets, the stir-fried potatoes with diced ham, and the steamed buns she fermented with makgeolli in a warm room before steaming them.

Yet, even when I try to trace those flavors back and recreate them, they never taste the same as they did back then. My mother and I had too little time together for me to ask for her recipes or preserve those memories while longing for her cooking. It breaks my heart to realize that while only the food remains in my memory, I will never know how she made those dishes, what she looked like as she cooked, or what was in her heart during those moments.
Back then, my mother was likely younger than I am today, and I wonder if she, too, missed her own mother’s cooking and care just as I miss hers now. What feelings was she trying to pass on to me back then? What did she hope I would understand? Even if it is late, I hope this becomes a time for me to step into her shoes from those days and truly come to understand her heart.

When she made me sujebi instead of porridge when I was sick, what was going through her mind? When I asked for a fried egg, why did she go out of her way to make rolled omelets instead—and how did she feel back then? Now that I finally understand her heart, I feel ashamed to admit that I didn’t back then. In my memories, all that remains is how I complained about getting a rolled omelet instead of a fried egg.

Now, I have a daughter and a son. Looking back on my life as a mother to these two children, I don’t think I can say I did a great job. I, too, was stingy with my expressions of affection, simply focusing on being faithful to the role of a mother.
I do not want a future where, after many years have passed, my children are left with only ‘photos of their mother’ and no trace of ‘their mother’s heart’ in their memories, just as I am now. Although they have already grown into adults who take care of their parents, I still want to express the love in my heart while I can. From my place as their mother…

I wrote on my blog, “To cook a meal is to think of someone.” That someone could be myself, my family, sometimes a friend… and my mother. In the end, I believe food is love and longing.
As reflected in my blog address, Dear, Celine, this will be a personal letter to myself—a space for the words I wish to share, the feelings I hope to convey, and the journey of understanding and connecting along the way.

Whether we are with family, with friends, or simply on our own, perhaps the moments that take up the largest part of our lives are those spent making food and sharing a meal together.

Even if the meals back then were not lavish, and the dishes they were served in were rough and simple, the modest time spent enjoying them together was pure happiness. Whenever my children find themselves craving those dishes from the past and wishing to make them, I want to help them rediscover that familiar taste. More than that, I want to leave them with warm memories, so they can say, “This is the time we shared back then, and this is how Mom spent her days.” Rather than leaving behind only photos of a mother from the past, I want to show my daughter and son a mother who is living this present moment with more dedication than anyone else.

So my blog may not be fancy; it will be truly ordinary. The everyday meals we ate, the information we shared, the paths we walked together, and our travels… these simple reasons alone are already more than enough for me to start this blog. That is why I am determined to pour my heart into creating it.
Some people told me that with so many blogs out there these days, others might take a post I created with all my heart, distort it, and claim it as their own. To be honest, at first I thought, “That could really happen, and it would be deeply upsetting if it did.”

But I am okay with that. I wonder if my writing even has that kind of reach, but even if someone were to copy my posts, the feelings poured into them and the moments I shared with my family will never fade or disappear. The true meaning behind those words remains entirely ours, so nothing else really matters. Even if that were to happen, if someone finds comfort or learns a delicious recipe through my writing, wouldn’t that bring an even greater joy?
Hoping for it to be so, I am about to begin with all my heart.
As autumn sets in and Pumpkin Spice Season arrives, to myself, as I begin this blog…
Dear, Celine.
